Skype Video Call Transcription

Although there are now a number of choices when it comes to choosing a company for your online calls and video conferences, Skype, Facetime and Google Plus hangouts are probably the best known. In this blog we are going to look at Skype and what options are available when it comes to recording your calls for transcription. Unfortunately, things are still not as straightforward as we think it should be when it comes to recording Skype calls, so we thought we’d go through some of the various Skype call recording software that we have found to be the most user friendly and effective.

Recording Skype Calls from your PC or Mac

We have used two different pieces of software to record Skype calls and they are Debut Video Capture from NCH (which is essentially a screen recorder) and Pamela (which is specifically designed for use with Skype). At the time of writing Debut video capture from NCH can be used on a free trial basis or can be bought for $39.95. It works by recording whatever is being displayed on your computer screen, (but can significantly slow down your computer while recording). We have found this to be a pretty effective way for recording Skype calls in different formats without a limited recording time.
Pamela Skype recording comes in several versions which are Professional, Business and Basic. Pamela Basic can be downloaded for free with limited functionality. The free version includes an answering machine and call recording for a maximum of 15 minutes, so is not suitable for long discussions or conferences. The paid version starts at £20.15 and goes up to £40.36 (at the time of writing) and depending on what paid version you choose includes unlimited call recording, a variety of recording formats, email forwarding, support for podcasts, blogs and video recording.

Recording Skype Calls on your iPhone

At this time, there is not a huge amount of choice when it comes to recording Skype calls on your iPhone or iPad. We have only used one, and we were quite pleased with the results, it’s called Sky recorder and is free to use. Simply activate the app before you start your call and it will record the audio. It’s pretty basic, but it’s free and records in wav format. Sound files can then be shared via sharing sites such as DropBox.

Skype Recording Software

As time goes on, it is becoming easier and easier to record Skype calls. If you have tried a way of recording Skype calls not mentioned in this blog, why not let us know what recording software you use and if it’s any good.
