Spanish is spoken by around 485 million people around the world and is the official language of 21 countries (Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela, Chile, Columbia, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Mexico, Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua, Peru, Paraguay, Guinea, and Guatemala). There are also an estimated 30 million Spanish speakers in the US (which has no official language) where the number of Spanish speakers makes it the second largest Spanish speaking country worldwide (Mexico has the most Spanish speakers globally). Spanish is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations, along with Arabic, Chinese, English French and Russian. In fact, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese (which has some 920 million speakers).
Spanish is part of the Indo-European language family and is known as a Romance language. It originated in the Iberian Peninsula from Vulgar Latin probably spoken third and eighth century. Nowadays, European Spanish is often called Castellano (which refers to the province of Castile in central Spain). Although the use of slang can vary widely from Spanish speaking countries, Latin American Spanish and Castellano are very similar although dialects, the use of nouns and verb tenses can be different. Spanish writing uses the Latin alphabet.
