Intelligent Verbatim Transcription
If you’ve never had an interview transcribed before, you may not be familiar with the different transcription styles that are available. One of our most popular (and practical) styles of transcription is intelligent verbatim transcription. Intelligent verbatim transcription is basically word for word, but omits conversational fillers (“you know”, “I mean”), repetition (“yeah, yeah”), false starts (“well I… I don’t think that matters”) as well as “um’s”, “uh’s” etc. This type of transcription preserves the true meaning and tone of the original dialogue, without keeping the speech, which can potentially make the transcript difficult to read and understand.
Strict Verbatim Transcription
Strict verbatim transcription is a transcription style that includes every utterance, including conversational fillers (“I mean”, “you know”), repetition (“no, no, no, no”), false starts (“So I did… I didn’t know what to do”) as well as “uh’s”, “um’s” etc. Strict verbatim transcripts can be hard to read and understand, due to the cluttered dialogue, syntax and grammatical errors. However, strict verbatim transcription is essential for transcripts that are likely to be used in a legal setting (as evidence) and for those who wish to make an in-depth analysis of speech.
