What is Transcription

What is Transcription?

Transcription is the process of turning audio information (such as a one to one interview) into a written document.
The transcription of digital dictation can be performed by a human or through speech recognition software. Speech recognition software is not suitable for transcription of interviews or audio with more than one speaker. If you choose to use speech recognition software, it is strongly recommended that you proofread your transcript for errors.

The use of a transcription service can save professionals hours of time. Dictation is much faster than typing and therefore, large amounts of information can be produced via Dictaphone. This can then transcribed by an audio typist. The transcripts be used to produce a variety of different documents such as books, articles, forms, letters, emails and scripts. Many transcription services can  provide edited transcripts and minutes from important meetings. Businesses and individuals that choose to outsource to a transcription company make huge savings as they do not have to employ temporary staff and expensive equipment. The use of a good transcription service also helps to improve staff productivity, as the workload is reduced and staff are able to concentrate on their strengths and onsite priorities.

Video Transcription

Transcription for videos has also become increasingly popular amongst business owners. Video transcripts are great for Search Engine optimisation and mean that businesses are able to reach a wider and more diverse audience, such as those who are hard of hearing. Video transcripts are generally written in a plain text file and can be transcribed with or without time codes. Including time codes with transcripts helps to maintain synchronicity with your speech and the subtitles that are being displayed.
This is also popular with the medical and legal professions. Reports, letters, notes and important documentation can be dictated and transcribed, saving medical and legal staff vast amounts of time and money. These sectors require specialist fields of typists and high levels of accuracy, experience and proofreading to ensure that the information transcribed is perfectly correct. There is also a high level of security required for these kinds of transcription, meaning that transcriptionists must always sign confidentiality agreements. Uploads and downloads of medical data must also comply with HIPAA and DPA meaning that file transfers must be highly encrypted when being sent to and received by the client.
